Learn to Read and Write

Learn to Read and Write

Course Description

CambriLearn's learning to read and write course uses the approach favoured in many of the newer phonics programmes, that of teaching letters and blends rather than teaching all the single letters and then starting on blends. This approach allows the child to ‘read’ words from Week 2. From Week 20, the course sets aside time for sight words.

Learning to read and write course outcomes

By the end of this programme your child will:

  • have learnt the basic 44 sounds used in the English language.
  • have started to learn Sight Words according to the Dolch list (supplied) as recommended by Dolch.
  • be able to blend sounds.
  • be able to decode unfamiliar words bybreaking them down into their sounds. As well as being a reading tool, this process of segmenting is also the earliest stage of spelling preparation.
  • be able to read a simple story.

Writing of letters has been includedevery second week asfirst practice but the main emphasis falls on listening, speaking, and reading.

Course duration

The Programme itself is spread over 24 weeks but this is flexible.

Children learn to read at their own pace, and it is critical that each child enjoys this process.

Requirements

The Programme assumes that your child:

  • is familiar with the letters of the alphabet.
  • (Ay, Bee, See, Dee etc.) understands that each letter in the alphabet has a name and a sound.
